Cuando Mirna y su marido Brandon se enteraron de que esperaban su primer hijo, los futuros padres estaban euf\u00f3ricos. Ambos siempre hab\u00edan querido formar una familia, y ahora, el sue\u00f1o se hac\u00eda realidad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pero no todas las emociones eran positivas. Mirna estaba especialmente preocupada por la salud de su beb\u00e9. Es un temor habitual de los padres, sobre todo de los primerizos, pero en el caso de Mirna y Brandon, hab\u00eda m\u00e1s de lo habitual por lo que preocuparse. La pareja vive en una peque\u00f1a comunidad rural de Guatemala, un pa\u00eds donde la desnutrici\u00f3n afecta a casi la mitad de los ni\u00f1os<\/a> menores de cinco a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Las finanzas tambi\u00e9n eran un problema. El trabajo escaseaba en su pueblo y, para encontrarlo, Brandon tuvo que empezar a viajar para trabajar en una ciudad cercana. Quedarse sola durante largos periodos sin el apoyo de su marido era duro para Mirna, pero mientras \u00e9l trabajaba, ella aprovechaba el tiempo para buscar recursos que pudieran ayudar a su beb\u00e9 en crecimiento.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cuando Mirna se enter\u00f3 de que en su ciudad hab\u00eda un grupo de apoyo a la maternidad de Feed the Children que proporcionar\u00eda atenci\u00f3n prenatal, incluidos suplementos vitales, educaci\u00f3n sanitaria y mucho m\u00e1s, se entusiasm\u00f3. Nueve meses despu\u00e9s, Mirna dio a luz a su hija Teresa. Sus padres estaban encantados. El beb\u00e9 era precioso, feliz y, lo mejor de todo, estaba completamente sano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Fue muy \u00fatil contar con ese apoyo durante mi embarazo\", dice Mirna. \"Si Feed the Children no nos hubiera apoyado, seguramente habr\u00eda sido otra historia. Mi hija seguramente habr\u00eda sufrido desnutrici\u00f3n\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pero la historia de Mirna con Feed the Children no termin\u00f3 ah\u00ed. Mirna tambi\u00e9n se uni\u00f3 al Grupo de Ahorro apoyado por Feed the Children para ayudar a su creciente familia a ser m\u00e1s estable econ\u00f3micamente. Teresa est\u00e1 en un programa de nutrici\u00f3n infantil y sigue recibiendo ayuda mensual en forma de suplementos nutricionales y alimentos. A sus cuatro a\u00f1os, Teresa sigue tan sana y feliz como antes; de hecho, \u00a1nunca ha sufrido desnutrici\u00f3n!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mirna tambi\u00e9n decidi\u00f3 hacerse voluntaria del mismo grupo de atenci\u00f3n que la ayud\u00f3 durante su embarazo con Teresa. Hoy ayuda a otras madres y beb\u00e9s a mantenerse sanos, y est\u00e1 comprometida con el fortalecimiento de su comunidad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
